GenZ, sides of a target you need to know! Ep2: Economic crisis and Work!
We saw in the previous article (Ep.1) that what characterizes the GenZ in the first place is digitization, a life that is always onlife and a Phigytal universe.
The second key word for understanding and knowing these young people is the economic crisis. The latter in fact characterizes the historical period in which this generation was born and lives. Parents raised Ganz’s with an individualistic mind-set that teaches them to have self-confidence, to rely on their own strength to fulfill themselves.
The GenZ have observed the economic crisis around them and are therefore disillusioned and with less expectations. Compared to the previous generation (Millennials) they are more cautious, pragmatic and concrete towards the present, but no less determined.
In fact, the instability and uncertainty of the historical period makes it a generation without fixed points but ready to roll up their sleeves to achieve its goals. They learned immediately that they must earn with their own merits what they want to achieve and that everything can change overnight, but they also know how to take advantage of the possibilities of technology and the time in which they find themselves growing.
The economic and social contingencies and the consequent concreteness and pragmatism that characterize them, lead the GenZ to think of job first as a source of income. Not that self-realization is not important, but in the face of the crisis and the difficulties of the country it gives way to profit. The type of contract and the level of remuneration are important for them.
Yet what perhaps really changes compared to other generations is the concept of employment. The GenZ do not see a clear separation between private life and working life, but rather imagine a mutual contamination of the 2 territories. GenZ want to find a job that gives them the opportunity to grow and express themselves, able to guarantee enough free time, to introduce new people, to travel and obviously – as we said – to earn an adequate salary.
It is not surprising that this young generation finds a fixed-time job too tight (9-18) but opts for a flexible solution that exploits connectivity and the increasing diffusion of technological possibilities in this sense.
For them, they can imagine working remotely, wherever they want, with flexible hours and therefore for goals. They are not afraid to take full responsibility but they need clear goals and appreciate their contribution being recognized. This will guarantee their maximum commitment and the achievement of the set targets.
The consciousness they bring with them (fruit of the times in which they live) makes these young people feel able to make a difference and be able to achieve success. They are future-oriented and have a kind of entrepreneurship in their DNA. Almost ¾ of Generation Z young people dream of starting their own business in the future and for this purpose, they are willing to work hard and grab new opportunities quickly.
The GenZs know that in the current work scene, experience counts, but even more so is the ability to adapt, following the changes of a constantly evolving society and market. They are aware that they will never stop learning and therefore their skills must always be updated… of course online!
